Livingston

Livingston

Leave your surfboards at the Pacific coast, and instead try putting along the short Caribbean coastline on the Gulf of Honduras.

Arrival to Livingston introduces a bold new flavor to the cocktail culture that is Guatemala. The Garifuna are a descendent blend of indigenous Arawak and Afro-Caribbean people that were forced to leave the Caribbean island of St. Vincent. Famed for traditional music and dance, attempt to step up your toe tapping with a circular sway to the sounds of the drum beat.

Stamp collectors can continue to grow their travel portfolio with an easy border hop using this water gateway to Punta Gorda, Belize.

An island in regard to road infrastructure, the town of Livingston can only be reached by boat. Treat yourself to the decadent sights of the Río Dulce as you motor down the water canal.

Places to Eat in Livingston

Wherever you end up eating, be sure to try topado and machuca, that is unless you classify fish as friends, not food. These Garifunas coconut stews will take your tastebuds on a pleasure cruise.

Budget buyers be aware, street food is prevalent in town.

Las Tres Garifunas

Garifuna-funa don’t you wanna fill your plate with traditional cuisine? Grab a seat and get your ofishial introduction with the machuca.

Things to do in Livingston

Seven Altars

After a 40 minute beach walk from town the 20Q entry awards you an escape from the sun, the forest foliage slathering its guests with high SPF shade. Wash away your sins (cheers to you gluttony!) in one of the 7 fresh water pools along this weather dependent waterfall walk. If visiting during a dry spell, do not be fooled by the name Seven Altars, a seasonally false advertisement as the waterfalls have already migrated elsewhere.

Playa Blanca

Displeased by the concept of a beach entry fee? Drown your grumblings with a cold beer. Consider it a consolation prize included in the 30Q admission. Try the ceviche as an accoutrement to round 2.

Palm trees and hammocks alike clutter this white (blanca) dusted shoreline. Soak up the sun or wade out,  toes sinking into the bisquelike bottom. Either way a breezy boat ride delivers you a seasational day.

Places to Stay in Livingston

La Casa Rosada

Nestled on the shoreline, this dreamy bungalow awaits. A pier stretches its arms over the water, its clenched fist forming a canopied platform. Hammocks blow in the seabreeze, gently cradling those in search of a daydream. Start each day (or at least one day) by skimming off some precious sleep time to catch the sun erupting from the depths of the Caribbean.

A hobbit approved menu covers all 3 meals in addition to snack time and dessert. A pinch pricey (~70-100 Q) as it pertains to dinner, but the topado is worth every penny. Additionally, go cuckoo for coconut ginger brownies.

Every rose has its thorns, and in this case the current owner is a real prick. Ladies be careful.

Dorms and a semi-private room are available.
